Rheumatic Heart Disease

Rheumatic heart disease is a condition in which the heart valves have been permanently damaged by rheumatic fever. The heart valve damage may start shortly after untreated or under-treated streptococcal infection such as strep throat or scarlet fever. Clearly, the best way to deal with a condition like rheumatic heart disease is to prevent it. This requires the aggressive use of antibiotics to treat strep throat or scarlet fever, both of which are caused by group A streptococcal bacteria.
